When I first heard the words "magnetic playwall," I pictured something complicated and expensive — the kind of thing that needs a handyman and a spare Saturday. Turns out I was overthinking it completely. So if you've seen these walls popping up on Instagram and wondered what on earth they actually are, let me save you the confusion.

So, what is a magnetic playwall?

A magnetic playwall is simply a section of wall that magnets stick to — a dedicated vertical space where your child can build, draw, sort and play. Instead of everyone huddling over the fridge or spreading toys across the floor, your little one gets their own creative zone at their height.

The clever bit is how you make one. You don't need a special room or a builder. You use a magnetic wall decal — a thin, self-adhesive magnetic surface that goes straight onto a smooth wall. Ours is the MagPlay Wall, and it turned a blank patch of hallway into the busiest corner of our home.

How is it different from a magnetic board?

Fair question — I asked it too. A magnetic board is heavy, framed and fixed in size. A magnetic wall decal is light, large and far more forgiving of small spaces. It gives you a generous play area (ours is 95 × 75 cm) without a bulky frame, and it sits flush against the wall like it was always meant to be there.

What do kids actually do with it?

Everything, is the honest answer. Do I need special walls?
