Magnetic wall decals, sometimes called magnetic play walls, have become one of the most popular screen-free play ideas in Australian homes. A thin, self-adhesive magnetic surface goes onto a smooth wall, and suddenly your child has a dedicated space for magnets, drawing, letters, routines and storytelling.
But not all decals are the same, and the differences matter, especially for Australian walls and Australian paints. As the team behind the original MagPlay Wall (we've been making magnetic play walls in Australia since 2023), here's everything we've learnt about choosing well.
1. Start with your wall, not the decal
This is the step most buying mistakes skip. Magnetic decals adhere best to smooth, non-absorbent, fully cured painted surfaces. In Australia, watch out for:
- Stain-resistant "wash & wear" paints — extremely common in Australian homes, and they actively repel adhesive.
- Freshly painted walls — paint needs weeks to cure before any adhesive product goes near it.
- Textured or rendered surfaces — adhesion will be patchy at best.
- Older or flaking paint — any decal removal can lift paint that was already failing.
An honest brand will publish a wall compatibility guide and tell you when NOT to buy the decal alone. If a product page promises "works on any wall, zero risk", be sceptical: no adhesive product can truthfully promise that.
2. Check the adhesive system, not just the word "removable"
"Removable" and "repositionable" are claims. The adhesive technology behind them is what counts. Ask: does the brand name and explain its adhesive? Does it describe how the backing behaves on different paint types? Is there guidance on repositioning limits? 3. Magnet hold: the difference between play and frustration
A magnetic decal is only as good as what sticks to it. Flexible magnetic sheet holds lightweight magnets and magnet tiles well, but heavy or small-contact magnets will slide. Check what the brand says its surface holds, whether their own magnet sets are designed for the surface, and whether real reviews mention magnets falling.
4. Size and placement
Most decals on the Australian market are roughly 90–100 cm wide and 60–75 cm tall. Bigger sounds better, but placement height matters more: the play zone should start where your child's hands naturally reach. For toddlers, that's lower than you think.
5. The question almost nobody asks: what happens if your walls aren't suitable?
This is where magnetic play wall systems differ most. If your walls are rented, textured, or freshly painted, a decal-only product leaves you stuck. Look for a brand that offers a board option, where the decal mounts to a board instead of the wall, and ideally a stand, so the whole play space can be freestanding and moved between rooms.
